Elisabeth Svantesson warns of Swedish budget chaos

Swedish Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson of the Moderate Party has warned of potential budget chaos depending on the outcome of the upcoming election. Svantesson noted that regardless of whether the Tidö parties or the red-green coalition secures a majority, government negotiations will face significant time pressure.

Internal disagreements exist within the Tidö coalition regarding the financing of various campaign promises. For instance, the Moderates propose savings in foreign aid and unemployment insurance, measures that have faced opposition from the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats, respectively. The Ministry of Finance estimates a fiscal space of only 50 billion SEK for new reforms throughout the next mandate period, necessitating prioritization or further cuts to fund additional promises.

While specific details of Svantesson’s budget proposal remain undisclosed, she indicated that different coalition members have diverging priorities, such as dental care, healthcare, and education. Svantesson emphasized that the current coalition members have a shared direction for strengthening Sweden, unlike the potential opposition parties.
