Elisabethkirche in Kassel begins new roof construction
Construction has begun on a new permanent roof for the Elisabethkirche in Kassel, nearly three years after its original roof collapsed in November 2023. The project involves installing 16 prefabricated wooden beams that will be supported by new steel mounts designed to allow for limited horizontal movement to reduce wind load.
Rather than a full restoration, the church will initially serve as a temporary space. Diözesanbaumeister Martin Matl stated that the interior will maintain a workshop-like or provisional character, intentionally leaving the traces of destruction visible for visitors. This approach aims to allow the building to be used for religious services and cultural events by the start of 2027.
During the upcoming documenta season, artist Jan Stephan Werner is scheduled to present a sound installation that incorporates materials from the church's destroyed organ.
