Senator Elissa Slotkin faces backlash over deterrence remarks
U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is facing significant criticism following remarks made during a podcast taping at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. Slotkin stated that she intends to pursue “signature cases” against not only the president but also the individuals who “enabled him” if Democrats regain political power.
Slotkin explained that her goal is to provide a “deterrence message” to young people entering the workforce. She expressed hope that students graduating from school would consider the potential legal and professional risks of working for a Trump administration, stating, “I want them to be like, Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want, and so let me avoid participating in that.”
The comments have drawn sharp rebukes from political opponents and officials. Scott Kupor, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, described the remarks as “disappointing and unprofessional,” arguing that they endorse political prosecutions to dissuade Americans from public service. Law professor Jonathan Turley also criticized the comments, suggesting they represent a devolution of politics toward fueling anger and rage in government.
