Elixir and Gleam release updates to type systems and developer tooling

Updates to the Elixir and Gleam programming languages have introduced new features regarding type systems and developer tooling.

Elixir version 1.18 continues the rollout of a new type system designed to provide early type-checking errors. While the system currently identifies certain mismatches, such as unreachable clauses in pattern matching, users are noting areas where the type checker could be further improved to catch more complex errors, such as specific struct comparisons.

Gleam has released version 1.18.0, which focuses on significant enhancements to its language server. Key improvements include full support for record fields, allowing for go-to-definition, find-references, and renaming capabilities across modules. Additionally, the language server now supports renaming type variables and automatically updating imports when modules are renamed.
