Elizondo livestock fair highlights drought-driven feed shortages
The autumn fair in Elizondo, featuring over 500 head of cattle, equine, and sheep, has highlighted significant challenges for the livestock sector due to persistent drought. Farmers report that the lack of summer pasture has forced them to use winter reserves much earlier than usual, extending the necessary feeding period from four months to potentially seven or eight months.
This shortage has led to increased costs for producers. One local farmer noted that the daily cost of feeding a cow has risen from approximately one euro to over two euros. Due to the scarcity of local supplies, some producers are being forced to seek forage and feed from outside the Navarre region.
