Željeznice Republike Srpske faces projected 75 million KM loss
Željeznice Republike Srpske (ŽRS) is facing severe financial instability, with management projecting a total loss of 75.44 million KM over the next three years. According to business plans for the 2026–2028 period, annual deficits are expected to rise, with projected losses of 20.09 million KM this year, 27.94 million KM in 2027, and 27.41 million KM in 2028.
The company is also struggling with a significant labor shortage. Dragan Peulić, president of the Independent Transport and Traffic Workers' Union of ŽRS, reported that the workforce has decreased by approximately 90 to 100 employees since the beginning of the year. While some departures are due to retirement, many workers are leaving due to low wages.
Although the Government of Republika Srpska approved the hiring of up to 30 new employees in August, the quota remains unfilled as specific job requirements have not been clarified. Furthermore, the company is attempting to offset the loss of major contracts, such as those with Željezara Zenica and Koksara Lukavac, by securing new short-term transport agreements for fuel and wire, though these have not yet ensured business continuity.
