Ellen G. White’s Orion Vision Scrutinized by Adventist Scholars

Two recent Adventist publications examine Ellen G. White’s 1848 claim of witnessing an opening in the constellation Orion through which a divine voice would descend. The first article frames the vision as a test of spiritual discernment, urging believers to evaluate any alleged revelation against Scripture rather than the messenger’s authority. The second work traces the narrative’s origins to Joseph Bates’s 1846 pamphlet “The Opening Heavens,” which already described an Orion opening, a luminous light, and the expected arrival of the New Jerusalem. By showing that these elements pre‑date White’s account, the authors argue that the vision may reflect earlier Adventist speculation rather than a unique divine revelation, raising questions about the use of such claims in Adventist apologetics.
