Ellen Haines: Australian MP injured in suspected vehicle attack
A local barber, Richard Jeffries, has been hailed as a hero in Australia after intervening during a suspected intentional vehicle attack on Member of Parliament Ellen Haines in Wangaratta.
Jeffries reported hearing a loud thud outside his barbershop and discovered that a Toyota LandCruiser had struck Haines. The barber rushed to the scene, disarmed the suspect by removing a knife from his pocket, and physically restrained the man on the ground until police arrived.
Haines, 65, was airlifted to a hospital for emergency surgery. While her condition remains critical, local media reports indicate she may have lost her leg. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Jeffries for his courage, describing him as a ‘good Samaritan’ who acted decisively despite the personal risk.
