Ellen Johnson Sirleaf celebrates 88th birthday

Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is celebrating her 88th birthday. A review of her four-decade career—spanning roles in the Liberian Treasury, the United Nations, and the presidency—reveals a leader focused on the concept of fragility regarding Africa’s progress and Liberia’s democratic gains.

In recent public addresses, such as her keynote at the NALAFEM Summit in Freetown, Sirleaf has emphasized that representation for women in public life is merely a starting point. She urged women leaders to move beyond mere presence in corridors of power toward the meaningful exercise of power guided by a moral compass. Her recent rhetoric has focused on transitioning from legacy to leadership, tasking younger generations with continuing the work of building stable, purposeful institutions.
