Elliðaey island house myths debunked

The isolated white house on the island of Elliðaey, located in Iceland’s Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, has become the subject of numerous internet legends and urban myths. Popular rumors have suggested the structure was built by an eccentric billionaire as a refuge for a zombie apocalypse, or as a COVID-19 isolation retreat.

Other myths claimed the singer Björk had exclusive rights to the uninhabited island. However, this was a result of confusion with a different island also named Elliðaey located in western Iceland. In reality, the building is a hunting cabin constructed in 1953 by a hunting association. The island has no permanent population, and while tourists are not permitted on the island without express permission, many boats pass by to view the solitary structure.
