Elly Schlein declares candidacy for Prime Minister at PD assembly

During a national assembly in Rome, the Partito Democratico (PD) has solidified Elly Schlein's leadership. The party approved a statute change to extend her mandate beyond March 2027 and voted to designate her as the party's sole candidate should coalition primaries be held. Schlein has officially declared her readiness to run for Prime Minister, stating she is prepared to lead the community “with or without primaries.”

This move has created tension within the center-left coalition. Schlein's stance directly challenges Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Movimento 5 Stelle, who has advocated for primaries to select a joint candidate. Internal PD reformists, including Lorenzo Guerini, have questioned the procedural correctness of the decision to limit primary competition to Schlein alone.

Recent Swg polling suggests a highly competitive political landscape. While Fratelli d'Italia remains the leading individual party, the center-left coalition is projected to win narrowly if either Schlein or Conte leads the charge. In a scenario with Schlein as the candidate for the 'campo largo' (broad field), the coalition would reach approximately 44.6%, narrowly ahead of the center-right at 44%.

Separately, Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra deputy Angelo Bonelli has introduced a proposal for a social bill to combat energy poverty, suggesting a progressive credit system for millions of families.
