Elly Schlein outlines strategy for center-left alliance

Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), has outlined a three-phase strategy for building a center-left alliance in Italy. Speaking at a festival in Parma, Schlein emphasized that establishing a shared political, economic, and environmental program must be the priority before discussing leadership roles or specific candidates.

Regarding the selection of a coalition leader, Schlein stated she is open to holding primary elections, provided there is a prior agreement on the governing program. This follows discussions from other political forces, including the Five Star Movement (M5S), which has expressed interest in primaries.

Schlein also addressed potential friction within the 'Campo Largo' alliance, specifically regarding foreign policy and military aid to Ukraine. She suggested that a compromise could be reached with Giuseppe Conte on the issue of Ukraine, noting that support for aid should continue until a 'just peace' is achieved.
