Elly Schlein pledges to increase Italian healthcare spending to 7% of GDP

Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party, has outlined key policy priorities during an appearance at the Festa dell’Unità in Foggia. Schlein positioned the center-left platform against the current government led by Giorgia Meloni, focusing on healthcare, wages, and military spending.

Schlein pledged that if the Democratic Party wins the next election, they will increase national healthcare spending to 7 percent of the GDP. This proposal serves as a direct counter to the government's recent public finance framework, which includes a plan to allocate approximately 14.4 billion euros toward defense capabilities and technological investments for the 2027-2028 biennium to meet NATO commitments.
