Schlein's energy proposal to Meloni sparks rift in Italian opposition

Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party (PD), has sparked internal tension within the center-left opposition, known as 'campo largo', after sending a letter to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The letter proposes a collaborative plan regarding energy transition and climate policy, suggesting the use of 14 billion euros in European resources for five key areas: thermal incentives, housing energy efficiency, industrial conversion, public transport, and electrical grid infrastructure.

While Prime Minister Meloni expressed openness to reviewing the proposals “without prejudice,” the initiative has met with strong resistance from Schlein’s allies. Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, stated that “there are no conditions to work with the Meloni government,” citing previous disagreements over drilling and energy costs. Similarly, Angelo Bonelli of Greens and Left (AVS) criticized the move as an “error,” arguing against collaborating with a government he accuses of sabotaging climate policies.

The friction highlights deep-seated divisions within the progressive coalition regarding strategy and identity, as leaders struggle to present a unified alternative to the current government.
