ELN drone attack on Ocaña military base kills three soldiers

The National Liberation Army (ELN) launched a drone attack on the El Trapiche Military Canton in Ocaña, Norte de Santander, resulting in the deaths of at least three Colombian soldiers. The casualties include Captain Marco David Pirajón Montezuma and professional soldiers Joel Alberto Jiménez Jaramillo and Jhon Carlos Marrugo Manjarrez.

Reports indicate that the attack utilized an estimated 20 drones equipped with explosives to target the facility. In addition to the fatalities, at least four other soldiers were injured, and a Colombian Aerospace Force helicopter sustained damage. The incident occurred during a period of heightened conflict in the Catatumbo region.

In response, President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the attack and vowed to use the full weight of state violence against the ELN. He announced plans, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and military leadership, to redesign the security strategy for the Catatumbo region to combat guerrilla and drug trafficking activities.
