ELN rebels and Venezuelan National Guard clash in Táchira
An armed clash between members of the Colombian National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Bolivarian National Guard in western Venezuela has left one person dead and at least five others injured. According to the non-governmental organization FundaRedes, the fighting took place in the Junin community, located near the border with Colombia in Táchira state.
The injured individuals were reportedly transported to the city of Rubio for medical treatment. This incident marks the first major confrontation between Venezuelan security forces and the ELN since Amelardo de la Espriega assumed the presidency in Colombia.
The 2,200-kilometer border between Colombia and Venezuela remains a volatile region where armed groups compete for control over drug trafficking, illegal mining, and smuggling. Consequently, US diplomacy has issued warnings to American citizens to avoid the Norte de Santander department in Colombia and areas within 10 to 15 kilometers of the border due to risks of crime, terrorism, and kidnapping.
