Starlink faces regulatory and security hurdles in India amid dispute with Mukesh Ambani
A high-profile dispute has emerged between Elon Musk and Indian business interests regarding the entry of Starlink into the Indian satellite internet market. Musk has accused Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani of using his influence to block Starlink to protect the market position of Jio, even referring to him sarcastically as ‘Prime Minister Ambani’. Musk argues that satellite internet would provide essential connectivity to remote areas and that increased competition would benefit Indian consumers through more affordable pricing.
Conversely, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), an economic wing of the RSS, has urged the Indian government to deny Starlink permission, citing national security concerns. SJM representatives argue that satellite technology could allow internet traffic to bypass domestic gateways, complicating law enforcement and monitoring during periods of unrest or terrorism. They emphasize the need for sovereign control over communications infrastructure.
The Indian government has rejected allegations of favoritism toward domestic companies, stating that all prospective satellite operators, including Starlink and Reliance Jio, are undergoing the same mandatory security clearances. While Starlink has received certain licenses, final security approval remains pending. The debate also involves technical disagreements over whether spectrum should be distributed through administrative allocation or public auctions.
