Elon Musk disputes Ukraine's use of Starlink for offensive drone strikes

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has accused the Ukrainian military of violating Starlink’s terms of service by using the civilian satellite network for offensive drone strikes. Musk stated that a “loophole” allowing such use was closed last week through service restrictions, warning that if Starlink were deactivated entirely, the Ukrainian front line would “collapse immediately.”

Ukrainian officials, including presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov, have disputed these allegations. Beskrestnov argued that the civilian Starlink system is technically incapable of supporting deep or medium-range strikes because it does not operate over Russian territory and imposes speed restrictions of 70 to 90 km/h on drones. Officials noted that more advanced military operations rely on Starshield, a separate military-grade system controlled by the U.S. government.

Following reports of connectivity issues that disrupted drone operations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that full access to both Starlink and Starshield has been restored. The service disruptions occurred amid political tension involving U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly told Musk to “put it back” after previously denying involvement in the service limitations.
