Elon Musk and Bill Gates predict transformative AI shifts
Elon Musk and Bill Gates have shared distinct yet overlapping visions regarding the profound impact of artificial intelligence on technology and society.
During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Elon Musk predicted the decline of traditional smartphones and app stores within a few years. He suggested that mobile devices will evolve into 'edge nodes' dedicated to AI inference, specifically AI video inference, rather than hosting individual applications or heavy operating systems. Musk envisions a future where hardware communicates directly with cloud servers to render interfaces in real-time based on user needs and AI predictions.
Separately, Bill Gates described the next two decades as a period of 'unprecedented volatility' before AI delivers widespread prosperity. Speaking on the Decoder podcast, Gates noted that AI will likely automate roles in sales, customer support, and accounting. He also predicted that humanoid robots could eventually replace human labor in manual sectors such as construction, agriculture, and surgery, potentially decoupling the production of goods and services from human labor.
