Elon Musk and Michael Saylor debate AI's impact on money

Elon Musk and Michael Saylor are engaged in a debate regarding the long-term economic impact of artificial intelligence. Musk suggests that AI could drive a future where work becomes optional and goods and services become so abundant that the traditional relevance of money diminishes. He envisions a scenario of “universal high income” where the marginal costs of many services fall significantly.

Michael Saylor, the founder of MicroStrategy, disputes this prediction by focusing on human psychology and scarcity. While Saylor concedes that AI may make basic necessities dramatically cheaper or even free, he argues that money will remain essential because humans are “status-oriented animals.” He contends that as basic needs are met, competition will simply shift toward scarce luxury goods and status symbols, such as private jets or larger homes, which cannot be made universally abundant.
