Elon Musk documentary by Alex Gibney faces legal threats

A new documentary directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, titled ‘Musk’, explores the life and career of Elon Musk. The film, which has a runtime of nearly four hours, traces his journey from his childhood in South Africa to his leadership roles at Tesla and SpaceX, as well as his acquisition of the social media platform X.

Following its premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, Bleecker Street Media released the official trailer. The documentary features interviews with industry experts, former collaborators, and personal figures such as Tesla co-founders and Musk’s first wife, Justine Musk. It aims to provide an unfiltered look at his technological innovations alongside the controversies surrounding his public statements and business practices.

Elon Musk has criticized the project, labeling it a targeted and defamatory attack and suggesting potential legal action. While there has been speculation regarding changes to international distribution partners, Bleecker Street Media has confirmed a limited theatrical release in the United States starting October 9, 2026, followed by a wider national release on October 16, 2026.
