Universal Pictures reconsidering international release of Elon Musk documentary

Universal Pictures is reportedly reconsidering its international distribution plans for the Alex Gibney documentary ‘Musk’. The four-hour film, which examines Elon Musk’s life and political influence, received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival but has faced legal threats from Musk’s attorney, who characterized the film as a ‘hit piece.’

While some reports suggest Universal may return the rights to the filmmakers due to political sensitivities surrounding the Trump administration, other sources indicate the studio still plans to proceed with an overseas release. In North America, the documentary is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 9 via Bleecker Street, with HBO holding streaming rights for early 2027.

The documentary utilizes archival footage, interviews with former associates and family members, and a computer-generated simulation of Musk to depict his rise from Silicon Valley to his current role in global politics and technology.
