Elon Musk predicts an age of abundance driven by AI and robotics
Elon Musk has predicted that the advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics will usher in an ‘age of abundance,’ characterized by universal high income rather than just basic income. Musk suggests that as goods and services become vastly more available, traditional economic constraints may diminish, potentially making money less relevant. He highlighted the medical field as a primary beneficiary, noting that superintelligence and robots could provide high-quality healthcare to everyone globally.
To prepare for this shift, Musk advises young people to pursue broad education across the arts, sciences, and engineering to remain adaptable. He emphasizes that understanding how to direct AI and robots will be more critical than narrow specialization.
Parallel to these optimistic projections, a McKinsey Global Institute study warns of significant labor market disruptions. The report estimates that automation could reduce labor demand by 36 million jobs in the United States by 2035. While growth in AI-related sectors could create approximately 40 million new jobs, roughly 11 million U.S. workers may need to switch occupations entirely to adapt to the changing economy.
