Elon Musk predicts AI and robotics will transform work and money

Elon Musk has predicted that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics could render human labor unnecessary within the next 10 to 20 years. Speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, Musk suggested that while some may continue to work for personal preference, the traditional necessity of work and the fundamental role of money may diminish as AI-driven production leads to an era of extreme abundance.

Musk envisions a future where digital and physical intelligence combine, potentially resulting in the deployment of one billion humanoid robots within the next decade. He proposed a model of ‘universal high income,’ where governments could provide direct payments to citizens if the production of goods and services outpaces the money supply. He advised young people to pursue broad educations in arts, sciences, and engineering to master ‘prompt engineering’ to effectively direct future AI systems.

In related business developments, Tesla has postponed its highly anticipated Roadster unveiling event in Texas to October 15 due to severe weather. The second-generation Roadster is expected to feature significant performance upgrades, potentially including SpaceX-related technology and capabilities such as jumping or hovering. While the event is highly anticipated, analysts note that the Roadster's market impact may be limited compared to Tesla's broader focus on AI-driven autonomous driving software.
