Elon Musk predicts AI will surpass human intelligence in five years

Elon Musk told The Economist that artificial intelligence is likely to exceed the combined intelligence of all humans within about five years. He assigned roughly a one‑in‑five (20 %) chance that this development could lead to a catastrophic outcome for humanity.

Musk also said that in the next decade or two money may become largely meaningless as machines and robots handle production and consumption, ushering an "age of amazing abundance" where anyone can have anything they imagine. He warned that a massive global thermonuclear war could derail this future. Meanwhile, he urged people to "enjoy the ride" and suggested that there is no need to press a stop button on AI development.
