Elon Musk predicts smartphone obsolescence as tech leaders limit family screen time
Elon Musk has predicted that traditional smartphones could become obsolete by 2030 or 2031. During an interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Musk suggested that artificial intelligence will eventually replace current operating systems and applications. He envisions a future where devices act as peripheral nodes for AI inference, processing commands through a combination of on-device and remote server-based AI.
Separately, reports highlight a trend among Silicon Valley leaders to strictly limit their own children's exposure to the digital products they helped develop. High-profile executives, including YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, and YouTube co-founder Steve Chen, have implemented various rules to restrict screen time or avoid short-form video content to protect attention spans. Other tech figures, such as Bill Gates and the late Steve Jobs, have also been noted for delaying or restricting device access for their children.
