Elon Musk promises reimbursement for Grok Bot financial errors

Elon Musk has publicly pledged that xAI will “make you whole” if the Grok Bot AI agent causes financial loss while managing a user's bank account. The Grok Bot, which entered beta on August 11, is designed to operate autonomously on cloud computers to track spending, pay bills, and monitor for unusual charges.

However, security experts and company terms present significant caveats. Information security researcher Rasa Jurgutytė warned that AI agents performing banking operations face risks such as prompt injection attacks, malicious manipulation, and accidental disclosure of sensitive data like transaction histories and balances. Jurgutytė noted that while reimbursement might cover monetary loss, it “cannot undisclose your information.”

Furthermore, xAI’s consumer terms appear to contradict Musk’s broad guarantee. The company’s paperwork reportedly caps most claims at either the fees paid by the user or $100, whichever is greater. For users on the $30 monthly SuperGrok plan, this liability cap represents a much smaller amount than the potential damage of a drained bank account.
