Elon Musk proposes a private “Network State” on Mars
Elon Musk’s aerospace firm SpaceX, valued at about $1.8 trillion, is promoting a concept called a “Network State.” Futurist Pol Safo explained that the idea envisions a private sovereign entity on Mars, built by wealthy individuals who would claim territory beyond the jurisdiction of existing nation‑states. The proposal is linked to the terms of Musk’s Starlink satellite service, which he has suggested could treat Mars as a “free planet” outside traditional Westphalian law. Safo described the Network State as a closed community of ultra‑rich participants who establish property rights in space, likening it to the way some billionaires purchase private islands or operate private jets on Earth. The plan is presented as a way to counter national governments and create a new form of governance beyond Earth’s borders.
