Elon Musk proposes lunar mass driver for deep-space AI satellites

Elon Musk has suggested that using a mass driver on the Moon to launch superintelligence satellites into deep space could achieve a capability exceeding one petawatt per year. This potential output, Musk claims, would far surpass the best-case value of Earth’s economy.

A mass driver is an electromagnetic accelerator designed to propel payloads along a track, utilizing the Moon’s low gravity and lack of atmosphere to avoid traditional rocket launches. While Musk has not provided specific timelines or technical details regarding power sources or aiming mechanisms, SpaceX is reportedly designing hardware for such missions, including Star Mind AI satellites intended for large in-orbit compute formations.

These ambitions follow SpaceX’s plans to significantly expand computing capacity, aiming for 2.5 to 3 GW by the end of 2026 and potentially reaching 20 GW by the end of 2027. However, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has raised concerns regarding the financing of such massive infrastructure, suggesting that SpaceX might require substantial borrowing to meet these goals.
