Elon Musk reacts to viral Grok AI chat about Indian citizenship

An Irish traveler visiting Kolkata sparked social media discussion after using Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, to inquire about the requirements for obtaining Indian citizenship.

According to the chatbot, the naturalization process typically requires a foreign national to have resided legally in India for at least 11 out of the 14 years preceding an application, including 12 months of continuous residence immediately before applying. Grok also noted that India does not recognize dual citizenship, meaning an individual would likely have to renounce their original nationality to become an Indian citizen. The chatbot emphasized that citizenship is not guaranteed and remains subject to government approval.

Elon Musk responded to the viral interaction on X (formerly Twitter) with the brief comment, “India is realistic.”
