Elon Musk rebrands xAI to SpaceXAI and cites Kardashev scale in satellite expansion plans

In July 2026 Elon Musk announced that his artificial‑intelligence startup xAI has been renamed SpaceXAI. The change ties the AI effort directly to the SpaceX brand, aiming to boost market visibility, attract talent and apply advanced machine‑learning models to space‑flight operations such as rocket design, telemetry processing and satellite management.

Musk has also highlighted the Kardashev scale – a theoretical framework that ranks civilizations by the amount of energy they can harness – to frame his goal of launching up to a million new satellites that would serve as space‑based data centres. He described this constellation as a “first step toward achieving a Type II civilization,” linking the expansion to broader ambitions of harvesting solar power in orbit and advancing humanity’s energy capabilities.
