Tesla pivots earnings calls toward AI, robotics and Optimus robot

Tesla’s recent quarterly earnings calls show a dramatic shift in focus. While the company delivered nearly 500,000 vehicles in the last quarter and still derives about 70% of its revenue from car sales, CEO Elon Musk now spends roughly half of his remarks on artificial intelligence, the Optimus humanoid robot and fully autonomous robotaxi projects. In 2022, AI‑related topics accounted for only 15‑20% of his comments, but that share has risen sharply.

Tesla plans to repurpose its Fremont factory for production of the Optimus V3 humanoid robot, with manufacturing slated to begin in the summer of 2026. The company has earmarked about $25 billion in capital expenditures for AI and robotics in 2026 and has invested $2 billion in Musk’s xAI venture. Optimus V3 is described as 5 ft 8 in tall, weighing 125 lb and powered by Tesla’s AI5 chip and xAI’s Grok model. Robotaxi development is being discussed more cautiously, with no new deployment targets disclosed.
