Elon Musk: SpaceX would not exist if fourth Falcon 1 launch had failed

Elon Musk recently reflected on the precarious early history of SpaceX, stating that the company would not exist today if the fourth launch of the Falcon 1 rocket had failed. Following three consecutive launch failures, the company was nearly out of capital in late 2008, with insufficient funds to sustain payroll or its Hawthorne factory if another attempt had been unsuccessful.

The first three launches faced distinct technical challenges. The initial 2006 flight failed due to a fuel line leak caused by a corroded aluminum fitting. The second attempt in 2007 reached space but failed to achieve orbit due to propellant slosh in the second-stage tank. The third attempt in August 2008 saw the first stage perform well, but residual thrust caused the stages to collide after separation.

The fourth launch on September 28, 2008, successfully placed the Ratsat payload into orbit, making Falcon 1 the first privately developed liquid-fuel rocket to reach Earth orbit. This milestone secured a NASA Commercial Resupply Services contract, which paved the way for the development of the Falcon 9, Dragon spacecraft, and reusable rocket technology.
