Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers reject Elon Musk's call for provincial separation

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly advocated for the separation of Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan from Canada. Musk's comments on X followed the victory of the Parti Québécois in the Quebec provincial election on October 5, 2026, where the party secured a minority government under new premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. Plamondon has expressed intentions to pursue Quebec independence, though he noted a referendum would not be an immediate priority.

In response to Musk's suggestions, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe issued a brief rejection on social media. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also strongly disagreed with the tech mogul, affirming her support for remaining within the Canadian Confederation.

Alberta is currently preparing for a provincial referendum scheduled for October 19, 2026. This vote will determine whether the province should remain in Canada or initiate a constitutional process for a second, binding referendum on secession.
