Tesla and SpaceX advance Optimus production and Terafab chip project

Tesla has officially commenced production of its Optimus humanoid robots on a high-volume line at its Fremont, California, facility. The company stated that the initial units meet production-grade quality standards, marking a transition from the engineering prototype stage to commercial-ready manufacturing. Elon Musk noted that while the manufacturing process is validated for commercial products, reaching a target capacity of 20,000 units per week may take at least a year or longer due to the complexities of the new product category.

Simultaneously, the SpaceX and Tesla joint venture, Terafab, is progressing toward its goal of large-scale semiconductor manufacturing. Musk announced that the project aims to produce its first functional test chip, utilizing SRAM circuits, by May or June 2027 at a research facility in Austin, Texas. The venture targets volume production by the third quarter of 2028, with an ultimate goal of producing one terawatt of computing power annually for AI and robotics.

To support these ambitions, Terafab is engaging with approximately 10 Korean chip suppliers and has received expedited equipment deliveries from vendors such as ASML. Musk estimated that capital equipment costs for Terafab will exceed tens of billions of dollars through early 2028, potentially reaching over $100 billion in the long term. Additionally, Musk revealed that SpaceX and Tesla are discussing a potential merger to better integrate their software, chip design, and robotics capabilities.
