Elon Musk warns of AI data center industry consolidation

Elon Musk has issued a warning regarding the future of companies specializing in AI data centers, suggesting that over 200 such entities may face ‘death and mergers.’ Musk noted that companies lacking independent revenue streams outside of AI data center operations will likely struggle, particularly as debt markets have tightened recently.

While making these claims, Musk’s SpaceX is reportedly in negotiations to secure a $40 billion loan to purchase Nvidia GPUs, which are essential for AI computing power. Although Bloomberg reports these negotiations are ongoing, Musk has stated that the financing deal is already complete.

This warning comes amid volatility for ‘neocloud’ companies on Wall Street. Stocks for providers such as CoreWeave, Nebius, and Iren have seen significant declines recently, attributed to the heavy debt loads required to finance infrastructure expansion.
