Elon Musk's DOGE faces scrutiny over savings claims and USAID cuts

Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are facing intense scrutiny regarding the accuracy of their reported savings and the impact of federal budget cuts. A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that DOGE exaggerated its cost-cutting achievements, noting that billions in touted savings lacked supporting evidence and that 96 per cent of claimed grant savings lacked adequate methodological data.

Beyond financial discrepancies, critics have raised concerns regarding the integration of sensitive personal data into Department of Homeland Security systems and potential conflicts of interest. During a Fox News appearance, Musk defended the organization's transparency, stating that DOGE's actions are an ‘open book’ and listed on official websites.

Simultaneously, the restructuring of foreign aid has drawn international criticism. Drastic cuts to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have disrupted humanitarian and medical programs globally. Researchers in The Lancet have projected that continued funding reductions could lead to significant increases in mortality rates in low- and middle-income countries by 2030.
