Elon Musk's SpaceX AI Satellite Plan Targets 1 GW of Orbital Compute by 2027
Elon Musk has said space is the only way to scale artificial‑intelligence computing. SpaceX aims to launch a fleet of AI‑focused satellites that would deliver about 1 gigawatt of orbital compute per year by late 2027, beginning with the 70‑metre AI1 satellite that can carry up to 150 kilowatts of interchangeable compute payload. The company unveiled a 11‑million‑square‑foot factory in Bastrop, Texas, to mass‑produce these “AI satellites” and has filed with the FCC for up to one million satellites projecting 100 GW of capacity.
Ahead of its Nasdaq listing, SpaceX merged its AI lab xAI into the rocket maker, rebranding the unit as SpaceXAI. The integration is intended to pair SpaceX’s launch capability with AI development, leveraging solar power in orbit to cut energy costs for large‑scale model training. Musk predicts that within two to three years space‑based compute will be the cheapest source of AI power, and the firm is exploring acquisitions such as the developer‑tool Cursor to boost productivity.
Industry analysts note technical challenges—thermal management, launch cadence, radiation exposure—could delay widespread deployment, but the announcement signals a major strategic shift for the AI and space sectors.
