Els Poblets mayor demands demolition of bridge following river flooding
The mayor of Els Poblets, Jose Luis Mas, is demanding the demolition of a viaduct over the Girona River, citing it as a primary cause of recent severe flooding. The narrow structure acted as a plug during heavy rainfall, causing the river to overflow and inundate the area.
Plans to remove the viaduct were originally drafted in 2013 by the Alicante Provincial Council, but the project was never executed. Arturo Poquet, a provincial deputy, stated that the council is now evaluating the replacement of the bridge with a more open structure, similar to the bridge in El Verger, which lacks arches to allow water and debris to pass more freely during floods.
In addition to the structural concerns, the bridge has sustained damage that requires inspection via drone. Local authorities are also calling for increased cleaning of reeds within the riverbed to prevent further obstructions.
