Elsa Schiaparelli and the evolution of fashion jewelry
The intersection of high fashion and jewelry design is highlighted through the legacies of influential creators like Elsa Schiaparelli and Elsa Peretti. Schiaparelli, a Surrealist trailblazer, significantly impacted the jewelry world by championing talents such as Jean Schlumberger and Suzanne Belperron, and inspiring landmark pieces like the Van Cleef & Arpels Zip Necklace.
To celebrate her innovative influence, the V&A Museum in London is hosting the UK’s first exhibition dedicated to the Italian-born French couturière, titled ‘Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art’. The exhibition explores her revolutionary origins and the evolution of her fashion house under current creative director Daniel Roseberry, who continues to incorporate Schiaparelli’s early design codes into modern collections.
Similarly, Elsa Peretti is recognized for bridging the gap between jewelry and fashion. Her work for Tiffany & Co., including iconic designs inspired by organic shapes, has maintained a lasting presence on runways and in the jewelry industry for decades.
