Elsinore film explores life of actor Ian Charleson

Directed by Simon Stone, the film ‘Elsinore’ depicts the life of Scottish actor Ian Charleson, known for his role in ‘Chariots of Fire’. The narrative focuses on a pivotal moment in Charleson’s career as he prepares to perform Hamlet at the National Theatre in London.

Set in 1986, the story follows Charleson after his HIV diagnosis, a period marked by significant social stigma and fear surrounding the disease. Despite his declining health, the film portrays his determination to complete his performance, which ultimately earned critical acclaim before his death in 1990.

Andrew Scott stars as Charleson, with Olivia Colman appearing as Dr. Margaret Johnson. The film, which was presented at the Rome Film Fest, examines the intersection of artistic passion and personal vulnerability amidst the societal prejudices of the late 1980s.
