Elton John Adapts Songwriting After Vision Loss for New Album

Elton John has lost most of his eyesight after a severe eye infection in France in 2024, leaving him blind in his right eye and with limited vision in his left. The condition forced him to abandon his usual lyric‑first approach and instead create instrumental tracks that he sends to longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin for lyrics. Working with producer Andrew Watt and other musicians, John has recorded a melody‑first album that he says is unlike anything he has made before. He discussed the new creative process while accepting the Glenn Gould Prize in Toronto, noting that the shift has given him a fresh chance to make music at age 79. The album is expected to be released early next year.
