Elton John’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ history
The song ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, released in 1973, remains one of Elton John’s most recognizable tracks. Using imagery from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ as a metaphor, the song explores themes of fame, excess, and the desire to return to a simpler life.
The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, who drew from personal experiences regarding the exhaustion of a life that appears perfect from the outside. While Taupin spent approximately two and a half weeks completing the lyrics, Elton John composed the music in just three days. The collaboration took place in Jamaica, with subsequent recording sessions held at Strawberry Studios in Château d’Hérouville, France.
