Elul Molad and Parashat Re'eh Observances Highlight Jewish Calendar
The molad (new moon moment) for the month of Elul is set for Thursday, 13 August at 8:15 a.m. solar time in Jerusalem (1:59 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time in New York). This announced time is used worldwide for the start of the month.
Parashat Re'eh traditionally falls near Rosh Chodesh Elul, roughly one month before Rosh Hashanah, and its verses emphasize the choice between blessing and curse. The month of Elul, called the Month of Compassion, is linked to Moses’ ascent of Mount Sinai, the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Compassion, and the preparation for the Days of Awe.
These observances together frame the spiritual preparation for the High Holy Days, guiding communal prayer, reflection, and the timing of religious rituals.
