Elvis Costello clarifies meaning behind song 'Alison
Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello has addressed long-standing rumors regarding his 1977 song 'Alison' from his debut album, My Aim Is True. While fans and critics have frequently speculated that the track is a murder ballad due to its ambiguous lyrics, Costello clarified on the Broken Record podcast that this is not the case.
Costello described the song as a love song containing the 'possibility of failure,' noting that it explores the idea that one's own nature might destroy the love they cherish most. He cited Jimi Hendrix's 'The Wind Cries Mary' as a significant influence on the concept of the song.
This clarification comes alongside the release of a 104-track box set celebrating the 49th anniversary of My Aim Is True, which includes demos, live performances, and outtakes.
