Elvis Costello reflects on debut album anniversary and musical evolution
To mark the 49th anniversary of his debut album, My Aim is True, Elvis Costello has released a 104-track boxed set reissue. The collection includes previously unheard songs and live performances that highlight his early stylistic range, including influences in roots, country, and pre-rock balladry.
In a recent interview, Costello discussed the origins of his songwriting, noting that the song “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes” came to him while traveling to visit his mother. He reflected on the emotional depth and themes of mortality present in his work even at age 22. Costello also noted that while his music emerged during the punk era, his style was characterized by a diverse array of influences rather than a radical reset of the past.
