Elvis Opiyo, acid attack suspect, found dead in Nairobi

Elvis Opiyo, a suspect in a high-profile acid attack case in Nairobi, was found dead in his Umoja home on August 11, 2026. Police suspect his death may have been a suicide. Officers from Buruburu Police Station discovered Opiyo with no visible physical injuries, but found an empty plastic cup, a spoon, and a white substance suspected to be poison near his body.

Opiyo, a driver attached to the National Intelligence Service, was out on bail at the time of his death. He had been accused of orchestrating a March 2026 attack where a corrosive substance was splashed on two women, including Seventh-day Adventist singer Mary Clare. The attack reportedly occurred after Clare attempted to end a relationship with Opiyo.

Opiyo’s wife informed police that he had been struggling with depression for several months. His body was moved to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. While Lamb Ministers released a statement mourning Opiyo as a fellow minister, the legal allegations against him had not been conclusively determined by a court.
