Elvis Presley biopics explore the line between history and cinema

Recent biographical films about Elvis Presley, such as Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’ and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’, blend historical facts with cinematic dramatization to explore the singer's life.

‘Priscilla’ is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, ‘Elvis and Me’. The film focuses on her perspective, detailing her meeting with Elvis in Germany in 1959 when she was 14 and he was 24. It highlights the complexities of their relationship and the control Elvis exerted over her image.

In contrast, Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ depicts the singer's rise through Sun Records, his military service, and his professional relationship with manager Colonel Tom Parker. While the film accurately portrays Parker’s Dutch origins and the tension surrounding the 1968 television special, it takes creative liberties. For instance, the film depicts a dramatic public firing of Parker in Las Vegas after Elvis discovers his true identity, an event that did not occur in reality.
