Elysian Aircraft develops battery-powered passenger plane

Dutch startup Elysian Aircraft is developing one of the world’s first large-scale battery-powered passenger planes, the E9X. The aircraft is designed to carry between 88 and 100 passengers with an initial range of 800 kilometers, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,000 kilometers.

To accommodate existing airport infrastructure, the design features a wingspan of over 50 meters with folding wingtips. The aircraft will utilize six electric motors and an innovative wing structure that integrates approximately 40 battery modules, each weighing roughly 1,000 kilograms.

Co-founder Daniel Jacobson states that successful implementation could reduce emissions to zero for half of the world’s flights and decrease total aerospace sector emissions by 20 percent. While the company is currently testing a scaled demonstrator model to analyze aerodynamic behavior, full commercial service is targeted within the next decade.
