EU Authorises Pfizer‑BioNTech XFG‑Adapted COVID‑19 Vaccine for 2026‑27 Season
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recommended that COVID‑19 vaccines for the 2026‑2027 winter season target the XFG variant, which accounted for about 74 % of sequenced infections worldwide in October 2025.
The European Commission has granted marketing authorisation for Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s monovalent XFG‑adapted vaccine across all 27 EU Member States, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Production has already begun at risk to ensure supply for the upcoming respiratory‑disease season. The EMA’s Emergency Task Force stated that targeting XFG would provide the best protection against currently circulating SARS‑CoV‑2 lineages. Global COVID‑19 vaccination campaigns are estimated to have prevented roughly 14.4 million deaths in their first year across 185 countries.
